Chamber Monthly News - August 1999

Discounts, Good or Bad?

The Chamber will be considering discount schemes between members in the near future and is interested in suggestions. The problem with discounts is that it is usually the private traders who are asked, have you ever heard of anyone asking a multi national to knock something of the price? To be fair multi nationals have an ongoing programme of discounts in many ways, the latest acronym being BOG OF - Buy One Get One Free. Expecting any discount just for being a Chamber member is not the Chamber' attitude and is not something it could ever encourage.

Discounts - good or bad - a way to attract business - or just another cost - we would like to know the opinions of local traders. Please contact Chairman Dennis Dowrick on 01736-330500, or the Secretary on 01736-719222.

Pirates Hotel Plan

I was unable to attend the August meeting when these plans were on display, but having seen them earlier in the day I am delighted that the Chamber is supporting this planning application. A quality development on the entrance to Penzance will improve the first impression visitors get of our town. The first application was totally unsuited for the area and much too large, this plan is smaller and will make an attractive addition to Penzance's residential housing stock. Dennis Dowrick, Chairman.

Calling all Clubs

The Chamber was recently asked to find out details of the Lands End Climbing Club for a London family and did so, but with a little difficulty. This has made us ask if local clubs would like their contact telephone numbers on the Penzance Chamber of Commerce Website, if so please contact us with the details and they will be added as soon as time allows. Please contact Bocaina Business Services on phone: 01736-365589, fax: 01736-365594, Email: webmaster@penzance.co.uk

The same applies to the CALL machine in Penzance Public Library, they are eager to include details but need to have the information to enable them to do so - phone: 01736-363954, fax: 01736-330644. This is an excellent opportunity for local groups to have their contact numbers listed - for free - on two much accessed sites - all it needs is a telephone call to benefit from this generous offer.

Miniature Exhibition

Penzance Miniature Club will be holding an exhibition at St. Hilary's School, Goldsithney, on Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August, from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. This promises to be a very interesting exhibition, with models in the 1/24 scale, so for something different this Bank Holiday St. Hilary's School sounds the place to be.

Round the Bend

This is a mechanical show for all the family, it is zany, clever, funny, interesting, I could rave on and on. Make a point of visiting the Barbican and catch the latest Mazey Madness. Summer opening hours are a generous 11.00 am to 9.00 pm, tickets are a bargain £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children, with money saving return tickets and special rates for groups. Well worth a visit. Dennis Dowrick, Chairman.

Mayor's Cricket Match

The Mayor would like to thank everyone who supported his recent cricket match and would be even more grateful if you will all return your sponsorship forms AND CASH, as soon as possible please. The busy gentleman has quite enough to do at present and would like all monies collected for this charity event in the bag without further delay.

Visiting Accountants

Michael Vickers and David Stephens, from Anthony Williams & Co. Ltd will be meeting five Swedish accountants visiting Penzance in September to discuss the differences in accounting practices.

Goldsithney Charter Fair

Usually held on the 1st Saturday in August the Charter Fair became yet another eclipse victim when permission to close the main street was not possible due to traffic being directed via the village to the ill fated Wheal Prosper camp site. It is being held this Saturday, 21st August and has lots of attractions, things to do, things to buy, things to eat. There are lots of games for children, including Richard Ready's Magic show, live music, Molly Jago's World Famous Cake Stall (not to be missed by the serious minded cake consumer ) both pubs open all day and stalls too numerous to mention. GOLDSITHNEY THE PLACE TO BE THIS SATURDAY FROM 1.00 to 5.00 pm

St. Erbyn's Car Park

Further to the item last month regarding vandalism in this car park, the Chamber has received reports of nine cars being damaged and has asked the police to advise on the situation. Penwith District Council cannot have extra security patrols due to cost and urge users of the car park to make sure they do not leave anything in view which may attract an opportunist thief.

Penzance OnLine offers free listings to local community associations

The next section to be added to Penzance OnLine - the Penzance Chamber of Commerce web site - will deal with the local community, both in terms of facilities and services available (e.g. education, health, social services, etc.) and also social activities and associations within the community. All community groups within the local area are invited to provide details for inclusion on the site to the Web Site Manager - phone: 01736-365589, fax: 01736-365594 or Email: sales@penzance.co.uk. Free listings are being offered on a similar basis to existing arrangements for traders, and under appropriate categories.

A local 'Events Diary' is being planned for the final quarter of 1999. Organisers of events due to take place in October, November and December and also during the year 2000, should contact the Web Site Manager with any dates and details they would like published.

Visitor numbers to the site continue to grow. In just two months to the end of July access to the site from 26 countries had been recorded.

A section covering Economic Development opportunities and a comprehensive listing of 300 Trade & Professional (non-retail) Businesses, Services and Organisations has now been included in the Commerce category of the web site. With these recent additions, the total number of Retail and Commercial traders listed in the Penzance OnLine web site is now approaching 1000. All businesses and other organisations, whether members of the Chamber or not, are encouraged to find and verify the accuracy of their individual listing. They should draw the attention of the Web Site Manager to any errors, or if they find that a local business has been omitted from the relevant listings.

Details are now available on the web site for those who wish to link from the 'free' listings on Penzance OnLine to pages designed for them on the site or on to their own web sites hosted elsewhere.
