Chamber Monthly News - February 2001

Town Regeneration

The Penzance Town Regeneration Steering Group will be holding a public exhibition Friday 2nd March (10am to 8pm) and Saturday 3rd March (10am to 4pm) in the Old Cornishman Building. The plans will be available to the general public and members of the steering group will be there to answer any questions.

Everyone who attends will be asked for their comments and these will be useful in helping to put forward the best plan for Objective 1 money. The best way for you to have your opinion heard is to come along to the exhibition. It is important for you to get involved now if you want to make a difference.

Marie Curie Charity Appeal

The Marie Curie Charity is holding its annual appeal from 10 March but this year they are trying something a little different. As well as Daffodil Day, the Charity is asking businesses in the town to dress their windows in the colours of the Charity. If you would like to take part, please contact Lynda Thomas on 01726-71200.

St Petroc's Charity Dinner & Auction

St Petroc’s Society Charity Auction Dinner and Dance is being held on Friday, 6 April at the Green Lawns Hotel in Falmouth. St Petroc's is a Charity for the long term homeless in Cornwall, the aim being to get people off the streets and back into long term accommodation and a meaningful lifestyle. The event is held to raise the profile of the Charity and to raise funds for St Petroc’s.

Tickets cost £15 each and are available from St Petroc's Society, 1-2 Victoria Square, Truro TR1 2RS before the 28th February. For more details, please phone Karen Conabeare on 01872-260948.

Student Appeal

The Chamber has received a letter of appeal from Olivia Maxfield-Coote, a student at Humphry Davy School who is hoping to travel to Switzerland later this year as a representative of the second Penzance Guides. She is asking for help in financing her trip so if there is anyone who can sponsor her or can help in raising the money, please contact the Secretary on 01736-710322.

Rural White Paper Conference

There is a one day conference at the Hall for Cornwall on the rural white paper on 26 February. Anyone interested in attending should contact Barry Mills on 01872-323808.

Medi-Tubes

Neighbourhood Watch Trust is introducing a new benefit by agreement with the police which is called Medi-tube. Medi-tube is a plastic container which contains a form for the person to fill in with their medical facts, medication and allergies. Also there are a small and a large sticker bearing a Green Cross, one to be allocated on the front door or window outside, and the small one to be located on the front of the fridge door.

The way this works is that, should a medic or someone be called out in the event of illness, checking the details in the tube could save a life, especially if the patient is unconscious when the medic or doctor arrives. Unfortunately these tubes have to be paid for, but they are available through the Trust at a modest price of 50 pence each. These can be obtained from Penzance Police Station. We will ensure that all the medical departments are notified.
