Chamber Monthly News - July 2001

The business event you cannot afford to miss

The business community is being invited to find out how it can get involved in the Objective One programme at a roadshow being hosted by Penzance Chamber of Commerce at the Queens Hotel, Penzance, on 24th July at 7pm. The event has been organised as part of a series of seminars being set up for the local private sector by Cornwall Business Partnership (CBP), the lead organisation supporting the programme's Business Task Force. Penzance-based Health & Safety and Food Hygiene Practitioners, Safety UK has sponsored the evening.

The roadshow will explain how the needs of business have been recognised in the seven-year Objective One programme and how individual firms can engage and join in achieving the Business Task Force's aim of establishing Cornwall as the place to do business in the 21st century. It will explain what sorts of projects are fundable and how local businesses can apply for such funding.

The event will include an opportunity for the audience to ask questions of a panel of experts and discuss their issues, as well as for individual follow-ups. Also at the event will be representatives of Penwith District Council's Economic and Tourism Department who will be able to explain their role regarding Objective One. They will be explaining the workings of the Integrated Area Plan Partnership Board and how Objective One bids are channelled through them. In addition those attending will have the opportunity to view the Phase One proposals for the regeneration of Penzance and its harbour, for which Objective One funding will be sought. The event will also include displays by a number of organisations that can offer support to local businesses.

The event is open to all businesses in Penwith and surrounding areas, not just Chamber members. Due to popularity numbers may have to be restricted, so please register your desire to attend by contacting the Secretary on 01736-719222.

Further roadshows are being organised by the Cornwall Business Partnership (CBP) through other local business organisations. For details contact the CBP on 01209-823261 or via email: enquiries@cbp-online.co.uk

'Ello? 'Ello? 'Ello?

Following complaints regarding unsatisfactory answering times for non-emergency calls made to Devon and Cornwall Police, constabulary Inspector Christine Brown attended our last meeting. Her explanation was largely concerned with the financial implications of running an efficient telephone service, to which the general retort of the members was that the price of a phone call would not be their major concern should they require police assistance. Many were shocked to learn from the Inspector that only two centres answer calls for the whole of the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, one of which has just three members of staff.

On Yer Bike

The Marazion based 'Once a Year Club' held their annual bike ride last weekend in aid of the Treliske charity CLIC, which challenges cancer and leukaemia in children. The cycling group, started three years ago by two friends engaging in crazy activities on their joint birthday, now has over 120 riders, and has raised over £40,000 for local children. The bike ride is to be followed up by a raffle at the King's Arms, Marazion, on Friday 20 July. There will also be a pop quiz and mountain bike raffle at the same location on Tuesday 24th. All proceeds go to CLIC, and the cycling club invite all to attend and to support this worthy cause

Beauty is more than skin deep

Stuarts Hair and Beauty set out in business with the motto: "to be the number one hair salon in Penzance, and to be the clients' first choice." Now with 20 highly skilled staff, luxurious premises in Market Jew Street, and a truly holistic range of services, it seems that the proprietors, Gary and Tracey Stuart, have achieved this objective.

More than a hairdressing salon, part of the success story of Stuarts lays in its embracing of all aspects of hair and beauty care. Hair extensions, nail art, facials, manicures, and temporary body art are just a small selection of services available; and perhaps more unusual for a salon's resume are reiki, shiatsu, and Indian head massage.

At Stuarts Hair and Beauty you will be delighted with this holistic approach, which is refreshing for a business enterprise. An ethical stand is evident in all, from the choice of coffee served to clients (Café Direct - a project ensuring adequate payment to plantation workers in the Third World), to the high level of support and encouragement given to the salon's employees.

In February 1997, Stuarts were the first salon in the South West to achieve the prestigious 'Investor in People' award. The company trains its staff up to NVQ II, and then provides ongoing training with job security - an uncommon situation for an industry in which teenage trainees often find themselves jobless after a low paid apprenticeship. Experts from London, such as the renowned Toni and Guy, are often invited to the salon to host training sessions, and the staff - the home-grown talent - at Stuarts find self-esteem and job satisfaction through staying on as part of this friendly and supportive team.

To book an appointment or a free consultation at Stuarts Hair and Beauty, call them on 01736-360622.

Exhibit 1 launches Tan City

Exhibit 1, the ladies fashion retailers situated in Market Place, Penzance, launched Tan City earlier this month. This new solarium has high-powered, state-of-the-art "Sun Showers" which promise an instant Californian tan. Prices range from £3 for a 3-minute session to £30 for an hour that can be taken in varying sessions. To book, pop in and see a member of staff, or telephone 01736-333446.

Exhibit 1 began trading as an independent wholesale operation, and continues to wholesale under its own label. The company has seen much development in recent months, including the launch of a body piercing studio and the inclusion of an exclusive range of Italian lingerie. The boutique now also stocks a selection of menswear, as well as a range of ladies fashion clothing, shoes and accessories.

Cosmic Princess

Every woman deserves pampering once in a while, and where better to relax and indulge yourself than at the luxurious and intimate surroundings of Cosmic Princess. The Penzance beauty clinic offers a comprehensive range of beauty and body treatments in a friendly, professional environment, with highly qualified and fully experienced therapists.

Among the therapies available at the clinic are choices of facial treatments to maximise the skin's potential; body care comes in the form of massage, depilation, and a range of skin detoxification treatments; and for make-up and eyes, the clinic offers everything from lessons in application to eyelash perming. In fact, the therapies available are too numerous to mention here, and cover every area of beauty therapy. A large selection of specialist beauty products, together with a gift wrap and delivery service, are also on offer at the clinic.

Cosmic Princess opened their doors in Albert Street in June, and are one of a number of incoming tenants to a previously run down gateway to Penzance. The business previously traded as La Femme in Chapel Street, which proprietor Sorcha Cubitt ran for ten months before seeking larger premises for her in-house training school.

The Sorcha Cubitt School of Beauty is an intensive specialist training school for existing therapists and for those wishing to embark upon a career in beauty, and who prefer the real-life setting of a working clinic to a college campus. Courses are run in small groups of six for personal tuition and attention, and training is given up to NVQ II and III in Beauty Therapy. The school also offers its own diploma with modules in a variety of therapies.

To find out more about the comprehensive range of beauty and body treatments and beauty products available from Cosmic Princess, visit them at 4 Albert Street, Penzance, or telephone 01736-361288.
