Late opening - such a boon for last minute shoppersChristmas and the Millennium are getting nearer, and the shops are getting busier. With everyone doing their last minute shopping for presents, late night shopping in Penzance is an ideal time to buy gifts and enjoy doing it! On Thursday 16 December and Thursday 23 December the shops in Penzance will be staying open late. This gives people who work all day a great chance to relax and enjoy themselves looking round the shops, rather than rushing after work or in lunch hours. These are not only nights on which the shops stay open late, there are street entertainers, music and bands. There are the lights to look at, and places to eat and drink after all the shopping has been done. The wonderful Grotto situated in the Wharfside Shopping Centre is also open late on these nights, so there is somewhere to take the kids, although the adults who've visited the Grotto looked like they were enjoying it every bit as much as the children! The Wharfside Creche is also open late on these nights, if you need to have a break to do your shopping. There will be free car parking from December 17 to 26 in the Harbour and St. Anthony's long stay car parks in Penzance. There is always a great family atmosphere in the town on the late shopping nights, so it really is worth a special trip into Penzance, as there is so much to see and do! Switch OnThe Christmas parade and the switching on of the Christmas lights was a great success on Thursday December 2nd. There was a lot of organisation and hard work put into making this as wonderful an experience as possible. The Brighter Christmas Volunteers have received many congratulations
for all their efforts, including this letter: "Congratulations! What a tremendously successful evening that was for everyone in Penzance. Thank you for all the hard work you and your team put in to the Parade as the Christmas lights were switched on. It was a joy to be part of the Parade on such a mild evening, and to see so many people lining the streets. It was great fun and the months of preparation were well rewarded. Thank you for inviting us." Jim Whitlock. VolunteersIf anyone has any energy left alter all the parties, the Brighter Christmas Volunteers need some help to take down the lights on January 9. If anyone would like to help please contact Hazel Trembath on 01736-361375. Festive window competition 'stitched up'The annual competition for the best dressed festive window in Penzance took place last week. There were over 70 windows to judge this year - the most there have ever been - and we looked at them all despite the freezing weather. Everyone who put so much work into dressing their windows should be proud that they are contributing to the lovely festive atmosphere for shoppers in the town. The presentations were made by the Chairman of Penzance Chamber of Commerce, Dennis Dowrick, in the Wharfside shopping centre on Thursday evening, after the grand opening of the Christmas Grotto. There were plenty of people to cheer the winners. They are as follows:
