Regeneration Plans Published

The Penzance Harbour and Town Regeneration Action Plan, which includes major redevelopment of the Harbour and the creation of a marina, has now been published. This follows nearly 12 months of research and consultation, by Consultants W S Atkins. The consultants were directed by the Project Steering Group to develop a plan to include economically viable and culturally relevant schemes to contribute toward the regeneration of Penzance and its economy.

On presentation of the Consultants' Report and the associated plan to the various local authorities involved, this has received overwhelming support.

The Action Plan now covers a total of 28 projects integrated into an overall plan for the Regeneration of Penzance and completion of these projects will result in the creation of over 1000 new jobs, significantly contributing to the the local economy.

The Plan has five main sections covering town centre movement and environmental enhancement, harbour and marine development, commercial development and economic opportunities, cultural and tourism developments and social and community projects. Included amongst the major elements of the plan are:-

It is hoped that funding for these projects will come from a number of sources - both in the public and private sector - with a substantial proportion being made available through the Objective One programme.

The next stage will result in the production of detailed submissions that will fulfil all the requisite criteria of the funding bodies and it will also include such matters as preparing detailed plans, an oceanographic survey and the construction of a computerised or physical 3D model. This will then allow the actual applications for Objective One and other funding to be made.

This phase will require the expenditure of considerable sums of money which will have to be raised prior to any major funding being received. As it is clearly in the interests of the business community, as well as the general public, to ensure that we achieve our Objective One goal, to assist in achieving this end people living and working in the town will be invited to contribute. The Penzance Harbour and Town Regeneration Action Plan is a joint project, supported by Penwith District Council, Penzance Town Council, Penzance Chamber of Commerce, Penzance Dry Dock Company, Penzance and District Hotel and Restaurant Association, the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company and Cornwall County Council.
