Funding for Consultants detailed harbour study

Penwith District Council has now received £600,000 worth of funding from Objective 1 to allow detailed study of the various proposals for harbour redevelopment & regeneration both in Penzance and Newlyn by consultants Hyder Consulting Ltd.

The consultants will study plans for revamping Penzance harbour, improving the sea links to the Isles of Scilly, development of Newlyn harbour to sustain its place as the top fishing port in England and improving sea defences along Penzance Promenade.

A marine study of the sea-bed, wind, wave and tidal movements in the Penzance & Newlyn sector of Mounts Bay will be one of the first activities to ascertain what will be need to be done to ensure the success of any of the marine projects.

The consultants will also examine the proposals for the Port Penlee Marina, to be located in the old Penmlee Quarry between Newlyn and Mousehole.

£1.2 million allocated to town facelift

It has been announced that Penzance is to receive £1.2million in aid to give the centre of town a facelift, which will be particularly targetted at Market Jew Street and the town centre. This will include improvements to both pedestrian and traffic movement, parking, and the seek to enhance the general appearance of this major part of the town.

The Penzance Harbour and Town Regeneration Action Plan is a joint project, supported by Penwith District Council, Penzance Town Council, Penzance Chamber of Commerce, Penzance Dry Dock Company, Penzance and District Hotel and Restaurant Association, the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company and Cornwall County Council.
