The £23 million plans to develop Penzance Harbour have been scrapped after six years of multi-agency preparation. The Route Partnership withdrew the planning application on Friday June 12 to review options for alternative locations for the passenger terminal and freight facilities. The joint venture filed its application in February to extend the harbour to the south and to build a new freight depot and passenger terminal on the Battery Rocks beach. The plans have been vigorously objected to by the Friends of Penzance Harbour and Penzance Civic Society, who have been lobbying the partnership to examine alternative options such as re-using some of the existing harbourside buildings and an out-of-town depot at Long Rock or Eastern Green. Penzance Town Council has unanimously objected to the scheme and nearly 700 objection letters have been lodged against the proposal. Following pressure from the public and to consider the results of the options study undertaken by consultants Halcrow, the plans have been pulled out. The decision has been wecomed by some Penzance based pressure groups and politicians. West Cornwall MP, Andrew George, who brokered and chaired negotiations between the Route Partnership and Friends of Penzance Harbour, has congratulated the Route Partnership and welcomed the decision. He has described the decision as 'considered and honourable'. And Penzance Town Mayor Roy Mann has declared that people power has finally prevailed. "I welcome this decision. When the plans are looked at again, I hope the consultation will be more open than before." Meanwhile shipping expert Charlie Cartwright, who is also the ex CEO of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company, has criticised the council for wasting taxpayers' money and requested them to cancel the Harbour Revision Order.
