After a lengthy period of animated local debate, the Option ‘A’ scheme for the redevelopment of Penzance Harbour to provide the mainland terminal for the sea link to the Isles of Scilly has finally been approved by Cornwall Council at a meeting on 8 March 2010.

Subject to approval by Government Ministers in London, this should now be able to proceed, with construction expected to be under way within the next 12 months.

This new facility will provide extended, and better protected, quayside space for a new, and larger, ferry – the present Scillonian III is due to be retired from service around 2014/15 – together with an up-to-date Passenger and Freight Terminal at the landward end of the present Lighthouse Pier, adjacent to the Bathing Pool and the Battery Rocks.

It is hoped that this development will be the fore-runner of a number of exciting redevelopment projects currently under consideration for Penzance.
